Come September
Being a September born, the month has always marked new beginnings for me. Came to Belgium 2 years ago in September, joined a French language class (briefly) very soon, before abandoning it completely to deliver baby. And then this September again, after 2 years of hibernation I plan to join Dutch classes.
All over Europe traditionally July and August are holiday months. And in the autumn season of September, grown-ups and children alike, start a new phase of work and school, rejuvenated from holidays. For someone who comes from a warm tropical country, September is not the preferred time for a new beginning. I am programmed to a school year beginning June, April-May being summer months for us. September beginnings take some getting used too, first day at school/work with overcast skies, grey clouds can dampen your enthusiasm a lot.
This year, we went on a short trip to India - July and August - and both G and me were pretty much stuck with sniffles and bouts of fever and cold, infact the majority of population had a cough-cold, and we had a wheezy, viral-fever, Vicks-vaporab vacation. My return journey seemed almost insurmountable and all I wanted to do was to get back here to Belgium.
On our return, we find the vestiges of the summer continue. G's pediatrician was on a vacation, we had to make do with a substitute doctor, but not happy with the diagnosis and care. The lethargy of summer is not yet gone and I have managed to unpack with great difficulty. One more day left for August literally speaking and I want to shake off the inertia and get going with life.
