May 2013 - The Elusive One
Think back to a month in your life. Do you remember any month or period specifically from the sweeping past or present? Maybe the month before the board exams, last month in the hostel eagerly awaiting to get back home, the month before you were getting hitched that was crammed with frantic shopping and plans on the side to run-away solo or when you were expecting your first baby, waiting for the moment and savoring the peace as you balance one of the last books you will read in peace on your tummy.. I seem to have always had conflicting emotions in every situation, constant yin-yang and the entire range in between.
As a part of this group celebrating our first anniversary on June 2, 2013, we were given a small challenge. Totally voluntary, I must add. The theme being 'The Elusive One'. One could choose to do something new, make a small change in your lifestyle, person..something you've been putting off for too long. You get the drift, move out of your comfort zones and explore/experience something different. The emphasis is on the attempt, not the result.
As usual, I jumped into the fray. I am a kind of person who gets easily bored with one thing. So I like to attempt different things simultaneously. Like reading different books, all at the same time. If you are reading this blog, you may know I'm learning two languages at the same time, which I use as an excuse to my limited progress:) If you read in between the lines, read non-focussed and easily gives up. Which is what I need to address mainly.
I hadn't planned for anything very difficult or out of the ordinary. One was to give up chocolate and sugar! Chin to my chest, a low-voiced confession, I plead guilty, it happened not even for 3 or 4 continuous days. I don't eat chocolate everyday but it's been very difficult for me to have my tea sans sugar.
Another was to stay far away from my phone when my children were home from school. And give them my complete attention just by being there. It wasn't easy to wean myself off the phone. And initially I took a lot of loo-breaks and even used displacement tactics to check updates on the fly. But overall, it is much better and I can live without checking my phone every hour to say the least. In fact, the husband and me have had a lot of fun times giving up our digital toys and watching the kids playing and saying the most cutest things which I've decided to post sometime. I also thought in a fit of generosity to include not getting irritated by frequent interruptions or not raising my voice but am intelligent enough to realise that that level of maturity or saintliness can't be acquired in a single month :D.
The giving up sugar was tied to physical fitness. No, I did not get around to the swimming-pool (totally blame the weather for this!) and for walks. Just about managed to eat sensibly. Nor did I take up the time spent indoors to finish some long-pending projects like this - taken up when Big G was a little over 3. As on date, still W-i-P and now that lil G is going to be 4, seems like I'm going to have to adopt a long-term vision on this one.
I've already talked about driving and the 'graduation' of sorts. Which ended my month's challenge with a crash bang.
Some unplanned stuff for the month was a 3-day trip to Prague which was a great change for us. It is a beautiful city and loved it. Last week was also the last class for my French course. I don't know if I will ever meet those people with whom I've spent every Thursday night speaking halting French during the class and switching to English or Dutch in the break ever again. We were all from such different walks of life, still we laughed together. And we had a swell Professor. Bitter-sweet realizations in life.
The biggest highlight has been to connect with such wonderful ladies on this group. I am a painfully shy person, if that does not come across through my blog in any way, let me say it:) And I loved to be part of this group and share experiences, trials, tribulations, successes of so many people with an open mind without the smallest tinge of envy or rancour, which is something one sees so often in real-life situations. Here's to the IndianBlogeshwari's group and loads of love and best wishes.

Relegated as a project for my grandchildren |

Awesome.. I read several books at the same time too!! :) Congratulations on your achievements this past month, CW. And connecting with all of you has been a pleasure to me too. Indiblogeshwaris rock. Happy Anniversary!
ReplyDeleteThank you, AWalkintotheWoods, welcome to my blog! Do you have a shorter name :P? Same here, connecting via IB has been fun, though I've been there for a short while only.
DeleteWW sounds good? :)
DeleteYes, WW is good!:) Though the comment had me thinking for a while!
DeleteWow !! You've tried a variety of new things. cutting down on sugar to visiting Prague...Way to go. Happy 1st anniversary to you too :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Diana, took on too much on my plate, not successful at managing everything! Happy Anniversary to you too!
DeleteA sweet post, Vibha!
ReplyDeleteI like the concept of doing something different to celebrate a milestone. However small or big the attempt, the spirit is to be celebrated and cheers to you and the group!
Thanks Uma, in the spirit of it all, I took on too much and have been v. distracted. So much so that I managed and survived a small crash!!
DeleteChatty, such a heartfelt note! Beautiful........truly beautiful. It is so wonderful when you know how a little anything becomes into a big something. Thank you for choosing to share this with us. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteThanks Vinita, a great initiative and heartfelt thanks!Loving being a part of this group!
DeleteWow.... loved it!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations for your weight loss..
Cheers :)
Thanks Me! There was only an attempt of sorts at weightloss:) No finite success.
DeleteNo chocolate? But why? I was just telling a friend today that if my daughter ever asks for a second helping of chocolates, I'd gladly give it to her, because it gives me an opportunity to eat one myself. Sadly, she never asks. And actually refuses if I offer her an added helping. Of course, that doesn't stop guilty old me from helping myself.
ReplyDeleteHappy anniversary.
LG, I eat more chocolates than my 2 kids put together, only they haven't caught on to it yet! Since I'm the custodian and I can never stop myself from second or third helping. Which shows!! Thanks for the anniversary wishes:)
Delete"non-focussed and easily gives up" *sigh* that's me too, sister! :)
ReplyDeleteMy achilles heel, that:(
DeleteThree day trip trip Prague..wow..tell us something about the city..
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful old historical city, Renuji - beautiful architecture all through, wonderful public transport, the Vltava river and the Charles bridge esp. beautiful and lit up at night. I loved the art and design sense there - it is unique. 3 days were just adequate, ideally 4 to 5 days are good.
DeletePretty cool, Chatty! Ooh, I so envy your French class. Did you learn Dutch as well. I studied French way back in school and don't remember anything. Hope your driving fears dissolve and you are back in top gear soon. Hugs and love
ReplyDeleteThanks Rachna, may I say I envy those who speak French as well;) Yes, I'm learning Dutch as well and in the process speaking a strange combination of the two which only I understand! Thanks for the driving wishes, I need it all:)
DeleteBut you still managed to stay on track. I also keep checking updates and that becomes a major interruption. I hope you are not giving up on driving. One crash and bang is a must for the car to realize who is driving :P
ReplyDeleteJas, I did not manage to stay on track for a lot of stuff I attempted:( No, I am not giving up on driving, but it certainly does not come easy to me.
DeleteI remember your 'graduation' and the crash thing. I felt strangely comforted- not by your crash- let me assure you. It felt good to know that there are other people out there who haven't yet managed to tame the four wheels, like me. :D
ReplyDeleteI lose interest very soon too. :P
Dagny
He he, Dagny, happy my crash-bang update could comfort you in any way! But I'm not giving up yet:) Some of us have to try harder at some things!
DeleteTwo languages simultaneously! Phew! That is too good. I want to learn French too someday.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to us. :)
Thanks Jyothi, wish you the same! The pace with 2 languages is very slow. Wish you good luck with French!
DeleteU get bored easily but U did so many things !
ReplyDeleteapplause for that :)
and specially kudos on staying away from mobile - more or less
good luck for all u aspire to do
Thanks Afshan, this month I am aiming to be focussed on doing nothing much:)
DeleteErr I don't know how I missed reading you after the blogging marathon :( :( Remember me???
ReplyDeleteHappy first anniversary to indiblogeswari :)
You have got some determination. Loved the post :)
Hey Tharini, welcome back! Truth is I did drop by your blog a couple of times, but I remember you saying you are on a break of sorts... I still have to add you to my reader, am so big on procrastination, sorry:) Thanks for the wishes! What determination are you talking about?
DeleteIts been wonderful to connect to you through indiblogeshwaries ! Its a wonderful group isnt it !
ReplyDeleteGiving up sugar is not easy - I tried many times and failed. I just couldnt have my tea without sugar. Finally I gave up on tea :P
Thanks Ruchira, same here! Yes, the group rocks! That's a good one, giving up tea! I know I can't, maybe can move to tulsi tea or something.
DeleteI bow down to thee.. Reading two books at the same time is almost impossible for me because I can hardly put the one I have in my hand down. ;)
ReplyDeleteI acknowledge the bow with another, very few books hold my attention!
DeleteThats me ! Thats me ! Unless the book is a page turner, I can be seen turning the pages of two , three books at the same time (nah different times of the same day. I try to limit my craziness you see) Crash banging ?? I need to do that , get over my mental block , sit behind the wheel and bang gently into a tree to get over my fears :) So here's to more craziness, more French and many more languages <3
ReplyDeleteThanks Sridevi, I wouldn't recommend crash banging though, it's too bad for the ego! Yes, languages and me have a life-long affair, always working on one or the other, mastering none by the way:) Come July, it's going to be Kannada:)
DeleteCutting down on sugar is impossible for me :(
ReplyDeleteYou weaned yourself off the phone!!! I need your blessings...I feel i am too addicted to my phone :(
Have not been successful in either - fight against sugar and the other one was managed with a bit of delayed checking, say every half-hour?
DeleteYou seem to have given your tasks a good shot and, more or less, stayed on track. Kudos to that! :)
ReplyDeletePrague sounds wonderful. Pics please!
Not really, TGND, long way to go. Am extending the challenge for myself this month too! I plan to do a post on it, only sometime:)
DeleteWow you did a lot of things this month. Sugar is a hard thing to cut down on but chocolate I gave up 18.5 years ago and don't miss it at all. Wish you all the best in your quest. Yep, I'm glad to be part of IB as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks Suzy, great to connect through IB group! I am fighting a losing battle with both actually - I did manage to go off chocolate for a month last year, but remember eating a whole bar on the sly! 18.5 years, that is an achievement!
DeleteLearning different languages is cool. I too juggle between books...well, you are active with many things on your agenda. Good luck and have a nice trip.
ReplyDeleteThanks Janki! I'm planning to be more focussed and take up only one or two things now! Nothing gets done otherwise!
