Big G turns 6 & the blog too

The week of  November 12th, Big G turned 6. Because of my clumsy accident, I could not bake her a Princess cake as she (and I) wanted. We ordered  her favorite fruit cake, with a sponge so light that it could float. There was no party this time, unlike last year. That was special as it was the first birthday party we had for her. But the ruckus created by only 6 kids.......and with the neighbour downstairs having complained to the landlord  about the sound, I dared not risk it again, at home, that is. We wanted to take the girls out to buy the birthday gift. However, on both occasions we couldn't step out  - once Big G and me did not agree on what to wear o:O and the other time, we all felt it was too much of an effort in the dreary weather!!?? Aren't we a lazy lot.

Six years is pretty unbelievable. I can relive the memories of me going to the hospital for her birth, as if it was yesterday. The whole life-altering routine of finally becoming a mother and sometimes questioning my sanity for wanting to make life so much more demanding. Certainly can't have it any other way. Last year, Big G had a sleepover at school for a day and the peace at home was unsettling. When I see her pictures of  only last year she looks like a little girl, not the big girl she goes about being.

One who shoulders the responsibility of her little world - a more demanding school schedule with homework, reading, writing, tests; being curious and asking a lot of questions, listening intently to answers, questioning authority, being opinionated,  insisting on choosing her own clothes, admiring herself in the mirror........ Also plotting to watch TV, figuring  out the Dora website, keeping lil sis in her place, and taking an active interest in all that is happening around her, producing drawings with a flourish that decorate the fridge....

Also I see her developing her own individual character - quietly assertive, gentle for the most part, beginning of negotiation skills happening. I have to teach her not to take the easiest way out for things. In some ways, she is earnest and sensitive like me and I hope she becomes street-smart and bold and confident. Food battles still happen, but getting better. Pink still rules as the  favorite colour, and there is a lot of interest in make-up. Her current career aspiration is to be a designer and a make-uper. She has developed an interest in dinosaurs of late.

She and her little sister have a great camaraderie bordering on hero-worship on part of lil G and matter-of-fact acceptance from Big G. The two are like a pack of  naughty magpies, looking after each other and ganging up against one or both of us. Hugs and kisses are shared and sometimes, blows and pinches too. I love the way they snuggle into the one-seater sofa and talk to each other.

A very happy birthday to you, Big G, you are a bright star in our life, and make it so much more lively and fun. The celebration is pending, let's think of something fun to do. One thing remains unchanged though - the need to do potty just while I am sitting for lunch or even thinking about it or a cup of tea......yes, every time!!

Well, just realized my blog is 6 years old too. Strange, I had started it in 2007 and really not got into the thick of things, the social media way. Kind of walked my  path and used it as a personal diary. It was only after blogging about G's party of last year and after Uma visiting my blog that I started blogging more frequently. Thank you Uma for your encouragement.

We are pretty cautious not to keep extra lights on - it's not Diwali we say- and I think the children have learnt that lesson well. On Diwali day, lil G was saying, But today is Diwali, put all the lights on, except in the bathroom and toilet, ok, Mama!
............................................................................................................................................

The stitches are out which is good but I think I may have touched a nerve and there is a lot of pain in my thumb and side of the palm. The Doctor says it  is going to take a while to heal. Meanwhile, I now live in mortal fear of coconuts and knives. I am being so careful that it may just backfire. If you know of any recipes for no-knife cooking, please do let me know:)

Hmm, from my post of last year, I remembered I had made the same pumpkin spiced cake for hubby's birthday. Now I understand his non-enthusiasm #facepalm.

  1. Happy birthday to Big G! Donno if you feel that way, but with the elder ones we do tend to marvel at how much they've grown and how much they have learnt, whereas for the younger ones, we are so much more matter-of-fact and oh yeah, she can do this types....I'm like that for sure.
Hope your hand heals soon. can't you use only frozen and cut vegetables until the mobility increases/pain lessens?

    1. Thanks Aparna! Well for my younger one now I'll be really happy if she does some of the stuff her sister did at the same age, or even show interest to do the same:) I guess they are very differently wired.

    1. Thanks Uma! That's a good idea regarding her drawings, I will do that sometime, am a big time procrastinator. Also, perhaps I am the parent so can be pretty biased too:) Yes I hope the pain goes soon too. I have only myself to blame for this.
