Book Review: Benjamin Writer-Messy

The book's name gives us an inkling about what it is about - a boy called Benjamin and that he is a messy writer. He stays in Pencil Land, which is ruled by the Handwriting Queen. Everyone here loves to write and what's more they can write very good. In fact, in Pencil Land where everything is shaped like a pencil,
everyone has Writer as their middle name, with the last name giving away how good or bad they write.
For example, Mr Robert Writer - Magnificently Perfect and Mrs Writer - Absolutely Beautiful are the most famous people in Pencil Land.

Now you also know why Benjamin has his name - Benjamin Writer-Messy. Otherwise, Benjamin is a talented  little boy who has a lot of friends and can do many things - cycling, football, swimming, singing, even making his own sandwich. There is only one thing he needs to work on - his writing. Not that Benjamin does not try, but he just does not get it right.

Naturally Benjamin is a bit worried when at school Mrs Writer-Teacher announces a Handwriting Competition.  He so wants to do good, yet he knows he is far from writing legibly. What happens then, is Benjamin able to work on his  handwriting and make it neater? What happens when he meets the Handwriting Queen? Who helps him and what happens in the Writing Competition? Does Benjamin remain Writer Messy for long?

This is amongst the  first book written by Priya Desai, who is a speech and language therapist. Priya works
with  schools in London where she interacts with children who have speech and language difficulties. Her experiences inspired her to write books with motivating messages for young learners that it is ok. One can do better with some help and persistence.

This book has a nicely etched story line and interesting characters with underlying messages of positivity and encouragement and willingness to improve. A book that will inspire little writers to practice.
