Change of base...

While we were contemplating a shift in house, which would have entailed going back to the old place, we not only moved homes but also country, and are back to India. Finally and such a relief since we were not contemplating long-term stay there and had already left it to too late.

We are settling down well. People (a lot of them across both sides) have questioned why we (rather anyone) would want to move back - India is a sh*thole, etc. Chaotic, disorganized, dirty, overpopulated, expensive too, hard life, struggles, etc. Hmm, what can I say, I do agree to most of these points, but I was living here before and  I never had consciously though that living abroad was an escape from all this.

Not to say I don't have any dissonances - especially since I know how different or comparatively uncomplicated life outside India is, in some ways. I am overcoming them to the best of my abilities. I mean if one makes such a decision on one single overwhelming factor like money, or better career possibilities or even the fact that you get avocados and celery everywhere there or you just can't think of not being able to shop at H&M, or some such store, things are so much easier. But life isn't like that always, right?

One thing is clear, here is where we belong, ever since we landed. . I can't tell you how different it feels from being a registered alien in a foreign country, living a limited, cautious existence. Trying so hard with languages and cultural connotations, acceptance, etc. We are accepted, unequivocally, no questions asked. One fine day we just started living here It feels so nice to be so close to parents, extended family, etc. Keeping fingers crossed on many counts.

So many changes, so many decisions but one day at a time. This is an update and a short post to break a long silence on the blog. I often hum this song of Simon & Garfunkel, since my hostel days when I used to live away from home. Which one of S&G is your favourite?

Home is always where the heart is :) You are really fortunate to have moved back. There are so many out there who keep contemplating and live an alien existence in a foreign land forever.

  3. My brother in law and family have been living in the U.S. for more than 15 years. They attempted a move some years back, but couldn't deal with it and are now U.S. citizens. Yet, they still express a desire of coming back during retirement. I think being close to family counts for a lot. And lets hope the chaos and mess gets better in the coming years!!

    1. Resettling back in your own country takes time. I always hear that in cases of people who can't adjust here it is the kids who find challenging. And amen yo your last statement, Fabida.
