Summer hols.......the beginning
It's the first week of the summer holidays. And I wish I could turn the calendar to September, my favorite month of the year. Not only for my birthday but more importantly for the schools to begin. Sigh! am really a mean parent ;-)
In the first few days we have covered a lot of activities - the library, swimming pool, the park, grocery shopping, at home reading, watching some TV, scrapbooking, and will do so on a loop... It seems to be going fine, I guess. If and a big IF, I am available all the time - to co-ordinate, enable, referee, motivate, push, cajole them in doing stuff. When I take some time off for other equally important tasks like cooking and cleaning, or even logging onto the comp, I am flanked on both sides by 2 little people who pose this question in the most irritable whine-pout manner, Mama, what now? I am getting so bored!!!!
The fact that I have started a last month effort to begin a healthy lifestyle (right now watching my diet) makes it a bit more challenging. You can be a bit more blasé about tantrums on a diet loaded with the forbidden sugar and carbohydrates but the fruit and salad stuff even by the bowlfulls keep me so unrealistically hungry and edgy at all times. And so far, I've only just managed not to take it off on the kids. Wrong timing! Much needed though to get into my summer clothes:)
Next week hopefully seems better as big G will be going for a sports camp. I want her to be a sporty kid, in every way. Normally, she would be happy to sit at home all day and daydream, draw some, watch TV, do some reluctant reading....So when she agreed to the camp, I signed her up pronto. This camp seems like a good place where they introduce kids to different types of activities and hopefully fuel her interest in any of the sports. One of those days, lil G and me will probably go out to check the July sales. In Belgium, July and January are the months for sales.
July is also the month to get the house in order before the M-i-l arrives. Last time, I had a newborn baby as an excuse to be a bit disorganised but this time that won't do. The kids are looking forward to having Ajji around, and it's the husband, not me, who jokes it will be great to have 3 kids at home, who get excited about car rides, and pizzas and who can be easily bribed with chocolate!!
Healthy food and also a variety of stuff - since I need to practice before August - is being cooked in my kitchen. Will post some that I need for keeps here. Sometimes with all our activities we tend to get late and then my kitchen elves come to my aid.
Here they are intently peeling boiled potatoes in anticipation of dosae-aloo palya. See you all soon, folks!

you do so much with you kids during holidays..no wonder you are waiting for sept.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to big G for the sports camp..it does sound interesting..and happy shopping with lil'G..
enjoyed reading your update, as usual :-)
Just trying too, but sometimes it's much easier to let Nick Junior take care of them :-)Also they both don't seem to be able to do the same kind of activities yet, which is why I feel a bit pulled in two directions!!
DeleteJuly is the time for sale everywhere I think:)
ReplyDeleteI still rememeber this question of my kids..what now:)..but then they are so adorable when they are little..
Kids and adorable?? I do find them so in short doses and when I look back at their baby years, and more so when they are sleeping. But when they are awake, I will reserve 'adorable' :)
DeleteWow, 2 of most lovely kitchen elves in the world :)
ReplyDeleteAnd you are cooking lots of varieties?!? Plz post them!!!
Cleaning before MIL visits :) all the best for that....
Thanks ZM:)). Yes, that task kept them occupied for like 15 mins - 2 potatoes each LOL!
ReplyDeleteSure will post stuff that I made and was well received - keep having hits and misses:-) and am waiting for your page for some lovely stuff too!!
Updated Kesar-Ilaichi shrikhand and mango shrikhand recipe, also posting a few bread recipes :)
DeleteSo cute, that pic....give them lots of errands (should not be a problem in a maid-free environment) - am sure they would love to help you.
ReplyDeleteGood luck for the hols, summer camp and mil's visit :)
Yes, will have to constantly think up stuff to do! But they are smart and tidying up their own room and stuff, they just never want to do!
ReplyDeleteaw, kids working diligently... cute :)
ReplyDeleteThanks:-)
DeleteI know Chatty Wren how difficult it is to engage kids in holidays. No, you are not being mean, you are just being a mom :) The most problematic part to keep finding one activity after the another to keep them busy.
ReplyDeleteAnd the role of referee must be suiting you :)
Good luck with the holdiays and much anticipated MIL visit :)
True Jas, if it's rainy and we are cooped indoors it can get challenging. Actually, looking forward to M-i-L visit as we'll be 2 people with the kids, almost a village ;-), anything better than one.
