Shopping with lil G
Is an experience I plan not to repeat in a hurry. Yesterday, after having dropped Big G to the sportscamp, lil G and me waited impatiently at the bus stop. lil G does not get to do bus rides very often and was very excited to sit near the window and go oohing!aahing! at passing sights. And I was smiling and nodding to see things through her eyes.
We were too early for the mall. Most shops were still opening and the staff arranging the display, etc. Because she insisted she had a ride on one of those cars they have at every 15 metres almost and enjoyed it. Good behaviour and co-operation started spiraling downwards from this point. Car ride over, she declared she was hungry and wanted cocklate croissant only, this after breakfasting at home! Since we were really early I decided we could kill some time by grabbing a bite at the bakery downstairs. There was a mini-tantrum to buy one of those plastic balls from a vending machine, which I ignored. Finally me after a full stomach and her croissant wrapped in a tissue for later, ok, mama, we made our way up. Another stop at a princess car and some scolding, diverting, promises for later, this time from me and whew, we were up finally.
And then it was disenchantment time for me. Normally, I am a not very decisive shopper but this time it was easy, I did not like anything at all. Period! Why do they stamp all those micky mouses and princesses and cars etc on children's clothes. Seriously, there ought to be some limits on merchandising. Plus there was other stuff to keep me distracted - lil G disappearing from my view again and again, she insisting on picking up some HelloKitty knick-knack that no way I would buy for her, forgetting where I had kept the stroller, and one place I really like to pick up stuff from changing their layout completely.
And forget about looking for stuff for me. After I strolled into a couple of stores with a now visible crying lil G who was refused an ice-cream, did not have the zin (energy) to shop. No way was I buying an ice-cream and then finishing it for her, did I ever tell you that a lot of times I never have a choice in what I want to eat. Yes, I do but then I would need to throw away a lot of food too. Well, we did buy a skirt for her and a pair of leggings for Big G. I dared not buy anything for Big G on my own because our views on dressing are polarised and I can do without dead inventory. So we had another car ride, no, she does not forget so easily and caught the bus back home and stayed put. I think I will have to wait for some years to go shopping hand in hand with my daughters. For the moment, I go alone.

It's hard isn't it? I enjoy shopping with Y a lot, she's quiet and enjoys browsing :) She's even happy doing grocery shopping! With my son, it's an absolute nightmare.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time I've been out shopping with lil G!! She's normally very good whilst grocery shopping, that's why I planned this trip. Big G is another story. We end up visiting the rest rooms, or eating, every thing but shopping where we have mini wars and after her stuff is done, she immediately loses interest in anything else!
DeleteLOLOl...poor you!
ReplyDeleteBut, I completely get you..I have never attempted to shop alone with R. Even with hubby to run after him, I can just a small window time to finish off whatever I need to buy.
I have forgotten what it feels like to walk past shops leisurely, looking and feeling at things before deciding peacefully before buying them.
I totally understand Uma! On the rare weekends we go shopping as a family, I have 2 kids in different directions and a hubby with the trolley, but standing far away & busy with his Blackberry!! Of course, the days I forget my list at home, it get's even better :-)
DeleteHey! This is my first comment her... I totally relate to what youv'e written... though Z is still young but the tantrums are something I tell you. Loved your post...
ReplyDeleteThank you Zoe's Mum, welcome here. Yes, kids and tantrums go together :( Will hop across to your space soon!
ReplyDeleteHey ChattyWren, Thank you for dropping by at MWaD! Its been over two years since I last visited a mall, for these very reasons. Been shopping online mostly - don't realize it when things change gradually :)
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome MWaD :-) Never tried online shopping for clothes, must do try it for the kids at least! Thanks for visiting:)
Deletemy sons enjoy shopping as long as i'm in some electronic showroom or some book store or music den...and after that their legs ache...they remember some inportant homework...or want to go to toilet URGENTLY...
ReplyDeletegod bless daughters..
:-)
anu
Ha ha, so it's with all kids, hmm! And I thought it was only my kids. Welcome here, Anu and thanks for visiting!
DeleteMy kids are older now, so I actually like shopping with them. But, when they were younger, I remember being in similar situations :).
ReplyDeleteI live in hope for such times:-) I guess it will happen when they are older.
DeleteI have never attempted to shop alone with my daughter.. gone are the days when she used to sit for some time patiently in the shopping cart..I also dream of the day when I can go shopping 'hand in hand' with her :)
ReplyDeleteGive it time, Nithvin! I realise I will have to wait too for 'the hand in hand' shopping a while :)
DeleteLOL!!!
ReplyDeleteSo Li'l G started her shopping career, is it?!?!
We recently went to a mall and Zini too decided that she wants to buy a bangle and a hair-band, completely overpriced. But the girl picked up the things and wore it, and her over-pampering papa, decided to buy them for her!!!!
And she has airs her views on everything from curtain to bed-sheet by either saying "Achha hai" or "Achha nahi hai, ganda hai"!!!
That's cute! I like kids who have opinions, both of mine do! Of course, for parents it's difficult to make them change their minds then:)
