Taking stock.....June 2012

The last two weeks have been pretty fast-paced. The week of lil G's b'day the husband was on a trip to India. India trips mean a long list of things we want - like medicines, sundry foodstuff (which we can also do without) and this time a jhadoo (broom). I use a vaccum but the broom comes in handy for those spots the vaccum does not reach well. I had baked a cake for lil G's birthday and tried a simple icing slathering of chocolate sauce and coconut and M&Ms. The kids did not care for it much, the adults asked for seconds!!! So a bit confused. Had saved a slice for the husband, he liked it too (he is a separate category).

My mother sent shakkarparas, puris, mango pickle and mangoes and some more stuff!! Lil G who never eats mangoes normally has become a big fan of nani mangoes. Had a parents-teacher meeting for Big G and heard nothing but good feedback re her. It was in Dutch so wondering if the teacher was talking about some other kid! No, there are absolutely no points for improvement, the teacher  said. Why is she so different at home?

I made 3 muthia dishes that week. Overdose, I know:) Muthia with tomatoes curry and lauki muthias with methi this time. I did not take any photos and did not care too much for the first recipe. The third one is mooli muthias and I will put up the recipe soon.

Spoke to a recruitment consultant and am pretty depressed after that. Yes, I know there is a long gap on my CV and I don't know the two languages spoken here - native proficiency. I have to do something about that or reconcile to the fact that I am not employable here. Maybe in India too, I don't know. I really don't know what I want to do anymore. And asking someone who is unemployed for a while what their career goal is, only HR consultants can do that!!!

Another first was lil G's review, flinke (great/good) was one word used for everything. Really? Skeptical mama! Thursday morning, packed two kids off to school and came back home with only lil G. Big G had a sleepover at school. Took a small bag with her - change of clothes, pyjama, sleeping bag, etc. The whole class built tents, slept in the gym room, watched a movie. My daughter came back telling me she loves pasta with mushrooms and courgette! You never make it Mama!! I have promptly added these on my grocery list.

The evening without big G was boring. lil G played to her heart's content with all the toys, no bena to control her and bully her. I, who am used to resistance and whines for everything I ask big G to do was feeling a bit lost. Life seemed too easy that evening! When I went to school the next morning to collect Big G's stuff, I saw her brushed and dressed, going in for her breakfast. Wow, the same kid who I have to carry every morning from the bed to the bathroom, I was impressed. I'd like these sleepovers a bit more often.

No great weekend plans #asifever. Arrange my cupboard before the summer vacation starts or I will not be able to for the next 2 months. Plan some for the vacations - I want Big G to work on a scrapbook about what she did for the summer holidays - she can draw/write/stick pictures, whatever. She seems to like the idea. And am thinking I will have to do something similar for lil G too, who wants to copy big sis in everything. She can identify some 4-5 alphabets now and is a big starfall.com fan. Oh, did you know, the colours of the rainbow are not VIBGYOR anymore!! They are light pulpul, dark pulpul, blue, gleen, yellow, olange and led, if you go with lil G.

That's my news, you people have a great weekend!!!

  2. hey loved this update!
I feel kids are generally better behaved when not in the company of people they usually take granted for - namely, parents :-)
Nice of you to let Big G go for sleepovers. When in moderation and discreetly supervised, I feel they can make for good ground to be more independent.
and I hear you on the employment part. HR consultants usually do not think much :-/

    1. You said it Uma, because nothing's changed at home. I need to be there for everything, even spooning food in her mouth! And about HR, let me not even open my mouth!

  3. are wah! shakarparras.. :) and what is a muthia?

I agree with Uma, kids are generally better behaved when parents are not around.
HR consultants are a pain in the neck when you are starting after a gap. But learn to ignore them. From your entry, it seems you are very confused and I can understand that too because I have been through this. No advice can be a good advice except try and focus on what you really want, really badly.

    1. Muthias are steamed dumplings simply by combining flours and grated vegetables (many combinations). You can have them dry (after frying/deep frying) or in a gravy preparation. Very popular in Gujarati cuisine.

Thanks, Jas, focus is the key word. HR consultants, hmm, no further comments!
