The 10, 000 hours rule

You know how often we try to learn something and rush in with full enthusiasm, then kind of get dissuaded when it seems a bit uphill or doesn't come to you as quickly as you need to and then abandon it. I do, in fact, i could write a whole post on unfinished projects in my life - driving and swimming being the latest ones in danger of falling off my list. I am still tenaciously pursuing  my French, mind you.

Chanced on this post by Blogger Carol of Ifbyyes.wordpress.com, http://ifbyyes.wordpress.com/2012/04/25/why-we-dont-want-our-son-to-think-hes-smart/#comment-6991 and wow, it makes a lot of sense. Practice makes a man perfect. Try, try until you get it again - adages like those,  please don't dismiss them.

From the article itself - 10,000 hours. That’s 9 hours a day for 3 years, or 3 hours a day for 10 years, or 1 hour a day for TWENTY SEVEN YEARS, for one to be great at something. Not merely good. She talks about the difference between smart and hardworking. And I will not say more. Read it and do share it :) And no, I am not ever going to call my  kids smart, at least to their face.

  1. Interesting, I say!
I so agree with the part about the tendency to slack off when things don't come as easily to us as expected. Also, the nature to compare ourselves to others..all of this makes us give up before we have achieved our full capacity.

  2. True, Uma. The fear of failure makes us never manage to get out of our comfort zones and put an honest attempt to even try attempting something!! You don't want to spoil the label of smart so you tend to try fewer and easier things, so limiting!

  3. that's a lot of math for my little brain but i get the point and it does make sense when we really want to achieve something
