Kitchen Keen?
Is there a word in English for when you want to cook or make something but end up making something else? Or in any other language for that matter? Why am I asking this - to highlight not my kitchen disasters. When it comes to cooking, I am not creative. So making up new recipes or experimenting is out of question. In the rare case I realize I have come up with something nice and exceptional, one look at google bursts my bubble, someone somewhere has already done it and way better:(
So here's just a one sentence recipe on how not to make hummus - Never use only soaked chickpeas. What, you already know this, respect!! I repeat more for myself, you make hummus from boiled chickpeas only. And for the record this is not the first time I've tried making it. Which only shows that though my family awards me ratings like good cooker etc on occasions, my kitchen walls are secret witnesses to the near hits and misses.
Well, now what exactly am I planning to do with some blended raw chickpeas with sesame seeds, garlic, coriander, et al - which just did not come together to make a nice gloopy hummus? Make falafels of course:)
P.S. - Did I ever tell you the first time I made falafels, I used boiled chickpeas and they all opened up in my frying pan? Some people, I tell you.

I nevr make falafal at home:(
ReplyDeleteWell this time I've had no choice. But it's a healthy and equally tasty alternatives to pakodas.
DeleteYeah I already knew it :) However I am sure all of us have made bloopers aplenty in the kitchen. LIke the time I set out to make a nice crunchy bhindy fry but used freshly washed okra and then wondered why it was all soggy and limp :) For a long time my mil used to ask me to prepare only curd rice for potlucks :))
ReplyDeleteLol, I can imagine. Mine could actually make up for a post. And when I call people over, I spend my time in the kitchen and the comp. equally researching!! Seriously, only curd-rice? Mine allows me to chop vegetables:)
DeleteHa ha...I chop veg as well and also allowed to wash dishes after the meal :)
Delete:)
DeleteLOL
ReplyDeleteWell, this happens with the best of 'cookers'. So, please do not be too harsh on yourself. :)
I am called a good cook by my family, too, and I and the OH like what I cook, but I have kitchen disasters at times, too. Sometimes even with tried-and-tested dishes.
And, you make falafel at home?! Wow! I haven't ever had it, even at restaurants! :(
No, not at all, am quite used to it. Which is why though the hubby thinks I am a good cook(!!??) he can be pretty hard-pressed to name a single dish I can consistently make ok:) Falafals are with chickpeas to what is parap/chana dal wadas, broadly speaking. Give it a try
ReplyDeleteHappens with me ALL the time. And now I know why the only time I tried making falafel at home they spread all over in the oil in my frying pan!!!
ReplyDeleteha ha, loved the emphasis on ALL. Seriously, it happened to you too:))
ReplyDeletehehehehehe! That sounds very familiar .Oh wait. I know why. Sigh. (That rhymed even!)
ReplyDeleteI cook well. (Yes, when there is no one to come forward and say it, I might as well say it confidently). But I do have my fair share of trial and errors. Some turn out to be a totally different dish but taste yummy yum and some .... the less said teh better. I do cover up by saying that THAT was EXACTLY what I set out to do and call it an aquired taste and all. But, that seems to be a used trick.
I can so understand you when you say your bubble bursts when people do it elsewhere and before you. But c'mon, you came out with it without referring right? I feel proud about it :)
Happpppieeeee New Year chattywren :) May your kitchen walls witness delicious experiments :)
He he, Kismitoffee, seems no one is immune! Good that I'm not the only one. Thanks, no that does not deter me from my experiments at all:) Wish you a Happy New Year!!
ReplyDeleteDoes that ring a bell? :D I am a self proclaimed disaster queen.. I do lot of blunders... I am planning to make falafel soon and now I am even more worried :P
ReplyDeleteNo no, it's actually very simple to make them, go ahead! and they are pretty interchangeable recipes too - falafels and hummus, IMO, if you overlook the fundamentals, hope I did not confuse you :P
DeleteAnd please yaar, activate email subscription for me.. I always miss the posts...
ReplyDeleteSure, give me some time to figure this out.
Deleteyou make falafel at home!!! i am impressed....Will keep your tip in mind if ever try my hands on hummus....
