Scrabble(ing) with and over ...Blogging Marathon 2014 Post 19

For a long time (read two years) since Big G learnt to read, I've been thinking about introducing her to Scrabble.  Finally bought it for her birthday in November. The reason I was dithering about buying it here is I have the game in Mumbai, and I am that penny-wise person :) But good sense did prevail. The only thing different in the Dutch version is that the instructions are in Dutch. In Dutch, one of the commonly used vowel is 'ij' together, but thankfully they don't have it in the same tile.

We brought the game out today and this is all what ensued -

1. Sulky Lil G who also shed few tears on being left out, so cancelled my name and the game was played by Big G and me, standing in for Lil G, yes, whatever.
2. We played in Dutch. Not being our first language, it was very difficult for me to come up with words. I do speak the language to an extent, but was surprised I couldn't think up words. Another thing that makes playing in Dutch not so easy as English was the limited vocabulary of Dutch known to me and of the language in general. In comparison to English, that is. For eg, two letter words, very few in Dutch. See here for ones in English. But a good way to learn new words in a foreign language.
3. Using the Dictionary and even Google at times was allowed for me. Big G managed well on her own.
4. Big G is new to the game, so I had to spend time in board development, so to say, to avoid getting restricted to a quarter.
5. I won but by a scant margin. No sense of victory at all, because of  point 3.
6. Soon the Scrabble Board was used as a way to get Lil G acquainted with capital letters. We are making a painfully slow and stubborn progress with learning to write small caps. Weekends take us a few letters back.
7. Planning to make this a weekend habit.

Do you like Scrabble, or any of those online Word games?
