Favourite days...Blogging Marathon 2014 Post 22

For me, personally, each day of the week has had a distinctive personality and rhythm to it. This has changed over the years. Sunday was for example, a much awaited day as a child. One could sleep till late, by an hour at most, but good enough. Then there were those Ramayana and Mahabharata series to look forward to. Homework would be finished by Saturday. Mom would be home all day, that was the best part of it. Also a day for a head-bath, an afternoon nap maybe, or just reading a book. Towards evening would be mixed feelings - looking forward to the week and regret of the slow but definite end to the weekend. If Monday was a test day or assignment day, then a good part of Sunday was spent in revising and preparation.

Monday morning blues I experienced only when I started working. It would start hitting me with the twilight hour on Sundays, my most dreaded hour of the day, ever since I can remember. Often it speaks to me of wasted hours, tasks half-done, misplaced intents, procrastination, lack of prioritization and makes me look forward to bedtime when I can look forward to temporary escape. There is a certain air of retirement to that hour, when you see the long shadows, amber streetlights, nesting birds, cars waiting patiently at the traffic light, cranky children who have to be fed their dinners, an eye on the clock whilst you wait for your loved ones to get home or if you are out, wanting to get back home and just be. The travails of  human lives world over in various shades and degrees.

Friday mornings were always  tinged with excitement and expectation - of the weekend. At office, one would see a more relaxed outlook, dress sense and the rush of anticipation as the clock ticks closer to your time of departure. Admittedly in my working life, I have lived from one friday to the next.

In my current situation, my weekends are more hectic than weekdays. I don't have weekend blues, but I just love Mondays. When I can have the house to myself, even if I have to spend a couple of hours to settle it. But increasingly, I despair of Wednesdays. It has to do with the school hours, it is half-day at school. 3 hours less of me-time. Kids come home for lunch which means I have to have it ready by then. Invariably, the husband leaves late for office that day. Friends who normally don't call will call on that day. I will have some deadline that needs to be taken care of. Kids have activities in the evening, so we are at home for short intervals, one child at a time. It is also the day for mid-week head baths. I can go on....

Today is the parents-teachers meeting for the kids. So after all the activities, I have to go to school again. The conversation is always in Dutch, I hope I can manage because my language skills are getting rusty.

Do you'll have favourite days? Or is it week and weekend for you?
